The 5 AM call-out

5:03 AM. Maria Lopez, a caregiver, calls the Sunrise Home Care after-hours line.

Coverage Line: "Sunrise Home Care after-hours line. How can I help?"

Maria: "I'm sick. I can't make my 7 o'clock with Mr. Thompson."

Coverage Line: "Sorry you're sick, Maria. I'll find someone to cover. Feel better."

5:04 AM. Coverage Line texts the four caregivers who can cover the 7:00 to 11:00 AM shift. The first YES gets it. No reply in 10 minutes means phone calls. Rosa's roster note says she does school drop-off on weekday mornings, so she gets the text but no call.

5:14 AM. Nobody has replied. Coverage Line starts calling. Ana doesn't answer. It calls James.

5:17 AM. James says yes on the phone. He gets the shift and the address. Everyone else hears it's taken. If nobody had said yes by 20 minutes, Coverage Line would have called the on-call person.

7:00 AM. The owner wakes up to one summary: "5:03 AM Maria called out. Nobody answered the text, so it called. James took the shift. 9:14 PM A new family called about care for her dad. Consult booked Tuesday at 10. Emergencies: none. Nobody needed to wake you."

The 7 AM visit happens. The family never knows there was a problem.

The 6 PM family call

6:02 PM. Mark Davis, son of client Helen Davis, calls after the office closes.

Mark: "I have a family emergency. I have to leave at 8. Can someone stay with Mom from 8 to 11?"

Coverage Line: "I'm sorry, Mark. Is your mom safe right now?"

Mark: "Yes, she's fine. I just can't stay."

Coverage Line: "Okay. I'm asking the owner now. I'll call you back by 6:30."

A real emergency would go straight to a person. Nothing goes out to caregivers until the owner says yes.

6:03 PM. Coverage Line calls the owner: "Helen Davis needs care tonight, 8 to 11 PM. Press 1 to approve. Press 2 if you'll call the family yourself."

6:04 PM. The owner presses 1. It took 20 seconds.

6:05 PM. The shift goes out by text to Ana, James and Lucy. James says he can't tonight.

6:09 PM. Lucy takes it and gets the address. Everyone else hears it's taken.

6:10 PM. Coverage Line calls Mark back: Lucy will be there at 8. That's 20 minutes earlier than promised.

If nobody says yes, the owner gets a call right away, before the family is left waiting. Owners who want to skip the approval call can pre-approve short evening visits for current clients.
